DOHA: Defending champions Lekhwiya yesterday picked up three key points when they edged past Qatar SC in round 18 of the Qatar Stars League (QSL).
Ali Hassan Afeef (59) and Sebastian Soria (89) helped Lekhwiya post a 2-1 win at Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Qatar SC, coached by Sabastiao Lazaroni, reduced the deficit through a looping shot by striker Bakari Kone who chipped one over Lekhwiya goalkeeper for his side’s only goal in the match in injury time.
Lekhwiya now have 39 points against Al Sadd’s 40 but the points leaders have a game in hand.
Al Sadd will visit Al Wakra tomorrow for their round 18 clash.
In other action yesterday, Eljaish beat hosts Al Arabi 1-0 after Mahir Yousef found the net in the 33rd minute at Al Arabi Stadium.
Eljaish, currently in fourth spot in the standings, have a tally of 34 points from 19 matches so far.
Also yesterday, Umm Salal beat Al Sailiyah 2-1.
For Umm Salal, the goals were scored by Said Boutahar (23) and Ismail Mahmood (54). For Al Sailiyah, the deficit was later reduced by Marcelo Taveres in the 81st minute of the match.
In today’s action, third-placed Al Rayyan, who will be full of confidence after their 4-1 win against QSL points leaders Al Sadd, will host Al Kharaitiyat. Elsewhere, Al Khor host Al Gharafa in today’s other match
