JERUSALEM: A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli forces Tuesday for allegedly attempting to stab an Israeli soldier in the West Bank, the Israeli police said.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said a Palestinian wielding a knife had approached security guards at the Qalandia checkpoint near Jerusalem.

"The Israeli forces at the scene shot the assailant, resulting in his death,” he said in a statement.

No injuries were reported among Israeli soldiers.

More than 245 Palestinians have been killed since an uptick in Israeli-Palestinian violence began in October 2015, according to Palestinian figures.

Israeli authorities say at least 42 Israelis have been killed over the same period.
