A Qatari artist Jamela Al Sheriam has been the guest of honour at Bari art festival titled “Women in art” held in in Bari, Italy, which opened recently to shed light on women’s contribution to art and to bridge gap between the Arab and Western arts.
Al Sheraim, who was welcomed warmly by the organisers during the opening ceremony was described as a fighter. She made a name for her during a period when women were prevented from putting their signature on their art works for cultural reasons. She fought against such culture and was recognised in the art world for her paintings. She was selected along with two other Arab women to represent the region.
She said that “it was a good chance to introduce Qatari arts to the western audience. It was difficult to transport some of my works to Bari by flight and I was forced to use train because of the size of my paintings.”
Al Sheraim participated with three paintings titled Motherhood, Prince and Qatar Vision 2022.
