DOHA: Hosts Qatar will take on Iran in the opening match of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Under-16 tournament which begins here today.
The match will be played at West End Park Stadium, one of the two venues for the seven-day tournament. Matches will also be played at Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC) Ground.
The other three teams in the five-nation championship are Kuwait, Hong Kong and Afghanistan.
This is the second major championship being hosted by Qatar Cricket Association.
In January, West End Park Cricket Stadium played host to Pakistan Cricket Board women’s triangular ODI and Twenty20 series involving South Africa, Pakistan and Ireland.
Cricket fans in Qatar saw more cricket action at the beginning of this month during the EID holidays with West End Park hosting an Eid Twenty20 Festival fixture between the World XI and Asia XI sides.
Some of the former greats like Brain Lara and Sanath Jayasuriya were on hand to entertain the crowd of 10,000 fans who patronised the match.
“We are planning more cricket events at the West End Park Stadium in the coming season. Hopefully, we will host big cricket events this season. After the ACC event, we will also announce to hold further tournaments,” West End Park Chairman, Mana Ibrahim Al Mana had said earlier.
