DOHA: Many people have requested authorities on social media to organise training and demonstration sessions on the use of a fire extinguisher in case of emergency, especially if a vehicle catches fire.
As temperatures soar in summer and fire incidents increase, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) had shared on social media important tips that can prevent fire outbreaks.
In response, people have sought training sessions to learn how to use a fire extinguisher.
“It is not about having only a fire extinguisher in the car, the person must also be familiar with steps to use it in case of a fire and how to maintain the equipment,”  said a commentator.
Another said, “Every time I see a car burning, people are just standing and waving hands to stay away, then people get out of their cars for sightseeing, while waiting for firefighters.”
The ministry said: “Fire incidents in vehicles are very dangerous as they can lead to major material and human loss.”
Fire cases occur increasingly in the summer months due to high temperatures, the neglect of vehicles and due to not checking the vehicles on a regular basis.
Most accidents happen in the front side of the car.
“To ensure safety from these accidents, we advise motorists to take precautions in such circumstances,” the ministry said.
Motorists were also advised to check the fuel tank.
The ministry said they should make sure there is no leakage of fuel as it could lead to a fire and should ensure the radiator is working.
It said all motorists should conduct periodic maintenance of electrical wires and replace them if damaged.
They should not stop their vehicles near generators or flammable materials and should not smoke in the car or at a petrol station.
“We urge you to inspect the vehicle before starting it (the engine, the bottom of the car and tyres), and ensure there is a fire extinguisher in the vehicle,” the ministry said.
