DOHA: Woqod is currently working to set up 20 new fuel stations across the country and nine of them are expected to be complete by the end of this year, a senior official has said.
Work on the remaining 11 stations is scheduled to be complete by the end of next year, according to Sheikh Hamad bin Saud Al Thani, acting CEO of Woqod.
He said the new facilities, once operational, will reduce the rush at existing fuel stations, Al Sharq reported. The nine stations to be opened this year are in addition to the Jumailiya and Al Wajba stations opened early this year.
In a letter sent to the Central Municipal Council (CMC) in response to complaints about crowding at Al Shahania petrol station, Sheikh Hamad said that the rush was caused by the recent closure of two neighbouring petrol stations in Bani Hajr and Shaqab.
Meanwhile, reacting to an article in Al Sharq about shortage of fuel stations, the Executive Department at Woqod said the company will soon set up portable fuel stations in several areas, keeping the highest safety standards.
The last session of the outgoing Central Municipal Council (CMC) proposed to the Ministry of Economy and Commerce to make available 40 basic food and non-food items at reduced prices throughout the year.
The civic body proposed to choose the items consumers need for the entire year.
CMC discussed the proposal tabled by member Mubarak Farish and urged the ministry to continue prize freeze on select commodities post-Ramadan.
“We appreciate the initiative taken by the ministry for fixing prices of 400 commodities during the holy month. We want to continue the initiative for the remaining 11 months, it is not necessary to reduce prices of all 400 items but only those that are basic and necessary for consumers,” Farish said in his proposal.
