The government is stepping up the implementation of the flood management master plan for Metro Manila in preparation for the rainy season and to address the frequent flooding of roads during heavy downpour.

In the past weeks, short heavy downpour caused flooded streets that stranded thousands of commuters and caused traffic gridlock around Metro Manila.

The projects, implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), aim to address the frequent flooding of roads during heavy downpour, according to Presidential Communications Operations Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr.

"We are implementing projects and programs to resolve the problem of flooding in Metro Manila in preparation for the onset of the rainy season,” Coloma said over government radio.

"According to the DPWH, apart from the Blumentritt Interceptor Catchment Project, other flood control and drainage improvement projects being implemented in Metro Manila in coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority are the construction of pumping stations and river walls, dredging of rivers and declogging of canals, and elevation of roads,” he added.

Coloma said these projects are part of the flood management master plan for Metro Manila and surrounding areas initiated in 2012. The comprehensive plan serves as a government roadmap until 2035.
