Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality, yesterday announced the launch of the ‘National Initiative to Encourage Local Production and Support Sacrificial Animals for Eid Al-Adha 1447 AH - 2026’.
This collaborative effort underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the domestic agricultural sector and ensuring that traditions associated with Eid Al-Adha are both accessible and affordable for Qatari citizens.
The partnership between the two Ministries reflects a holistic approach to addressing the needs of the community during this significant religious occasion, emphasising the importance of both economic stability and cultural observance.
The initiative aims to support local livestock producers and provide sacrificial animals to the people at subsidised prices, while enhancing food security and promoting local production.
By offering livestock at lower costs, the government seeks to ease the financial burden on families during Eid and stimulate greater participation in traditional rituals. Furthermore, this initiative is designed to encourage local farmers to increase their output, ensuring a robust and self-sufficient national food supply.
The programme contributes to the sustainability of the domestic livestock market and aligns with Qatar’s long-term vision for agricultural development. According to the announcement, the sales began on Thursday, 4 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH, corresponding to May 21, 2026, and will continue until Saturday, 13 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH, corresponding to May 30, 2026.
Under the initiative, both local and imported sheep will be offered at a fixed subsidised price of QR1,000 per animal. Eligibility is limited to Qatari citizens aged 18 and above, with one sacrificial animal allocated per Qatari ID card.
MoCI stated that sacrificial animals will be available through Widam Food Company’s designated livestock pens located across several areas in Qatar, including Al Shamal, Al Khor, Umm Salal, Al Wakrah, Al Shahaniya, and Abu Nakhla. Purchases will also be available electronically through the Widam mobile application.
The Ministry further clarified that slaughtering, cutting, packaging, and loading services will be provided through separate service coupons totaling QR50.
The fees include QR16 for slaughtering, cutting, and packaging, and QR34 for loading services. Additionally, it noted that citizens benefiting from the slaughtering and packaging coupons may redeem them from the start of the initiative until the end of December 2026 if they choose not to slaughter their sacrificial animals immediately during Eid.
The initiative comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to support national production, stabilise market prices during the Eid season, and facilitate access to sacrificial animals for citizens across the country.
