Bratislava: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was is stable condition in hospital Friday after undergoing heart surgery, the head of the Bratislava clinic said.
The 51-year-old, who won a third term as premier in March on a strident anti-refugee platform, was hospitalised last week for cardiological tests.
"This morning, Prime Minister Robert Fico underwent successful cardiac surgery and his condition is stable," Mongi Msolly, director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, in the Slovak capital told reporters.
The hospital refused to provide details, but according to local media reports citing unnamed sources Fico had undergone triple bypass surgery.
Doctors also would not confirm local media reports that Fico suffered a heart attack last week before driving himself to hospital.
Fico's populist left-wing Smer-SD party won 49 seats in the 150-member parliament in March general elections.
It had previously governed alone but has now been forced to team up with three other political groups, including the right-wing Slovak National Party.
