Doha: The opening ceremony of the 24th ISF World Schools Handball Championships will be held today evening at the Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah Stadium in Al Sadd while the match, in both the boys and girls section will klick off at three different venues in the morning session.
A glittering opening ceremony has been lined up by the organisers of the nine-day event which ends with the closing ceremony at the same venue on February 28.
A total of 18 countries are taking part in the boy’s section while 19 girls teams will be seen in action in the tournament which will be played on a league-cum-knock out basis.
Hosts Qatar face Morocco in the first match of Group A, and will subsequently take on Denmark, Austria and Poland and Morocco in the tournament organised by Qatar School Sports Association (QSSA), in technical collaboration with Qatar Handball Federation.
The draw ceremony was held here in December, with defending champions Turkey clubbed with Brazil, Greece and Belgium in Group C. France, the tournament’s most successful sides with six titles and runners-up in the 2016 edition, are with Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria in Group C while Germany, Czech Republic, Romania and Georgia complete Group D.
In the girls’ tournament, which will be its 23rd edition, defending champions Denmark, France, Croatia, Belgium and Georgia are in Group D.
Group A has Turkey, Germany, Romania and Bulgaria while Group B consists of Hungary, Austria, Serbia and Czech Republic. Slovenia, Brazil, Sweden and Greece complete Group C.
The event will be held at three venues namely: Aspire Academy of Sports Excellence, Qatar Women’s Sports Committee and Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah Stadium in Al Sadd.
Meanwhile, all matches from Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah Stadium (Central Court) will be live on ISF handball FB page today, International School Sports Federation (ISF) has announced on their facebook page.
The matches can be watched live on facebook at facebook.com/ISFSports.
Live streaming will also be done by the Olympic Channel on their website www.olympicchabnnel.com from the semi-final and final stage on February 27 and 28.
