Qatar Career Development Centre (QCDC) celebrated the successful completion of its Winter Career Camp 2017 in a ceremony on Thursday at the Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Student Center.
Eng. Meshal Al Shamari, Director of Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC); Dr Abdul Ghafour Al Heeti, Director of Qatar Music Academy (QMA); and Hassan Al Saai, Journalist and Anchor at Qatar TV attended the event, along with a number of media professionals. During the ceremony, certificates of participation were distributed to around 30 high school students.
The camp provided students with the basics of a strong career culture and helps them to discover their skills and talents, which will allow them to carefully choose their future careers.
The 2017 edition featured five days of interactive workshops designed to hone students’ personal skills and develop their professional capacities. The sessions included ‘Success Skills’, which aimed to equip students with the basic skills to excel in the labour market and succeed in their careers, and ‘Leadership Skills’, which introduced students to leadership traits and the principles of successful teamwork.
Abdulla Al Mansoori, Director of QCDC, said: "We are honoured to graduate a new batch of students from the Winter Career Camp 2017, and we hope they will utilise the skills and abilities they have gained here to make decisions regarding their academic and career paths. QCDC aims to help youth in Qatar to join the labour market and help Qatar as it transforms into a sustainable, diverse economy.”
QCDC has organized the Winter Career Camp for three consecutive years to help students secure a promising professional future. Shaheen Al-Sulaiti, QCDC Senior Operations Officer, said: “This year’s workshops and activities were aimed at equipping participants with the necessary skills to choose the career path that best fits their potential. Participants gained first-hand insights into job opportunities in Qatar through site visits to leading organisations across the country, and gained the necessary professional skills to effectively and successfully prepare them to join the labor market.”
The site visits included a trip sponsored by Msheireb Museums to the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Jassim House, where students listened to a lecture about the history of the heritage house and its cultural significance to Qatar before inspecting the paintings and archaeological exhibits in the building. Students also visited Lusail City, where they learned about the smart and sustainable design of leading residential and recreational landmarks as well as the self-sufficiency plans that characterize the modern and unique project, which include a light railway network and floating taxi system. Students also toured the different facilities of Hamad International Airport, including observation towers, duty free shops, and airline and information offices.
Additionally, participants visited the Immigration Department, where they learned about job opportunities at the airport and the responsibilities of each department.
Ahmed Al-Kuwari said, "After my visit to Msheireb Downtown Doha, I came to realise that I like the teaching profession because it helps familiarize community members with Qatar’s cultural heritage and history and contributes to the development of people's skills and abilities."
Additionally, Hassan Al Saai, said: "I wish I had had the opportunity to participate in such a useful activity during my study years, as it helps to instill a career culture among students and encourages them to discover their skills and talents."
