DOHA: Over 50,000 patients receive anaesthesia services at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) every year, the 169th anniversary of Ether Day with a two-day conference was told.
The event, organised by HMC’s Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Perioperative Medicine, Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and CT-ICU at Heart Hospital, featured presentations by international and local speakers.
Around 400 surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and ICU staff took part in scientific sessions as part of activities marking the day.
Aspects of anaesthesia were highlighted international specialists, including Prof John Myburgh, Intensive Care Medicine, University of New South Wales and Senior Intensive Care Physician, St George Hospital, Sydney, and Prof. Hugo Van Aken, Chairman, Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy, University Hospital, Munster, Germany. The day commemorates the advent of anaesthesia as a speciality on October 16, 1846. Prof. Abraham E Marcus, Chair, Department of Anaesthesiology, ICU and Perioperative Medicine, and Patron of the organising committee for the event, said the team of anaesthesiologists is as relevant as the surgical team, as both provide medical care to patients before, during and after surgery. He said more than 50,000 patients receive anaesthesia services at HMC every year.
