DOHA: The outgoing Central Municipal Council (CMC) wants the Ramadan price freeze on the 400 food and non-food items to continue for the entire year.
Member Mubarak Fraish who tabled the proposal for discussion today, said he wondered why such price freeze should be there only during the fasting month.
“For the benefit of the common man, the freeze should be applicable round-the-year,” Fraish said in remarks to this newspaper. The fourth term of the CMC (2011-15) will hold its last session today.
The session was slated for last Tuesday but rescheduled due to a lack of quorum. However, it will be held today even if the quorum is not met. He said the 400 items include only four major food items — wheat flour, sugar and rice — but in some neighbouring countries they also include tea bags, fresh chicken and baby milk.
