Doha: The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) in Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), recently concluded its second annual summer school. The five-day session was titled ‘Ethics and Sensitive Contemporary Issues’, and focused on Critical Thinking in Islamic Studies.
The summer school, held this month at the Euro Arab Foundation in Granada, Spain, was organised in collaboration with Nura Intercultural and the European Muslim Network.
Through its membership of QFIS in HBKU, which is a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, CILE supports the Foundation’s mission to enhance cultural life by renewing contemporary Islamic legal and ethical thought and behaviour to address modern-day challenges.
The summer school, attended by 45 graduate students from around the globe, attempted to further discussion on ethics and their role in developing solutions to a variety of contemporary issues, especially those of authority, labour, freedom, and gender.
A series of comprehensive lectures were organised, addressing topics such as the boundaries of the authority of the Prophet; the role of man on earth: between revelation and reason; the relationship between spirituality and ethics; social ethics in the Quran; labour rights; religious freedom in the Quran; gender equality between reality and myth; the contemporary political challenges: dealing with Power in a global world; and constitutional crisis of Islamic civilisation.
The lecturers included Dr Tariq Ramadan, Executive Director of CILE; Chauki Lazhar, Deputy Director of CILE; Ray Jureidini, Professor of Research on Migration Ethics at CILE; Mohamed El Moctar Shinqiti, Associate Professor of Political Ethics at CILE; Mu’taz Al Khatib, Assistant Professor of Methodology and Ethics at CILE; Dr Fethi Ahmed, Research Coordinator at CILE; and Dr Mawahib Abubakr, Business Support Manager at CILE.
CILE also organised three public lectures in parallel with the events of the summer school. These lectures focused on the concept of Shariah, the guidelines of critical thinking in Islam, and migration challenges from an Islamic perspective.
