DOHA: A law is on the anvil which, once in effect, would confer judicial powers on all customs officials on duty.
A draft law was unanimously approved by the Advisory Council at its weekly session yesterday.
The draft contains amendments to three articles of Law No 40 of 2002 regulating customs and its levy.
Currently, the law says that if the need be, customs officials are to be singled out and armed with judicial powers with special permission from the higher-ups.
However, the new law seeks to automatically give judicial powers to all customs officials on duty so they could act sternly against violations.
