Abuja: At least 38 people were killed in an armed attack in Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria.

Nigerian police, Saturday, said that the attack targeted a village in Zamfara State, resulting in multiple deaths, adding, however, that calm has returned and that the police are patrolling the area.

Local sources had earlier reported that the gunmen raided the village of Tungan Dutsi in an attack that lasted until late Friday morning, setting several buildings on fire and shooting residents who tried to flee, killing at least 50 people, while the number of those abducted has not yet been determined.

Northwestern Nigerian states are facing a multifaceted security crisis, amid armed gang activity that include looting villages, kidnapping residents, and terrorizing communities, in addition to active armed groups seeking to expand their influence southward.
