DOHA: As part of Qatar’s efforts to protect the workers’ rights, the State Cabinet yesterday approved a draft law amending some provisions of Law No. 14 of 2004 simplifying the judicial procedures for labour-related disputes.

Some provisions of the draft law stipulate establishing a committee or more at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs responsible for settling labour-related disputes. The committee is charged with settling all disputes related to the provisions of the labour law or a work contract in a period not exceeding three weeks.  The authority concerned refers those disputes if it fails to resolve the dispute. Those involved in the dispute may appeal a decision by the committee to another committee charged with the appeal of labor disputes, the Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.

The committee will be chaired by a judge from the court of first instance. The judge is chosen by the Supreme Judiciary Council. The Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs will nominate two ministry officials to be members in the committee. They should have an experience in accounting. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud chaired Cabinet’s regular meeting held at the Emiri Diwan
