DOHA: Kuwait yesterday called on ministers in-charge of Social Affairs from GCC member-countries to focus on social problems facing their societies in order to ward off social risks like terrorism.
“What is, therefore, needed to be done is to help strengthen the GCC people’s sense of belongingness, their identity and citizenship,” said Hind Sabiha Al Subei, Kuwait’s Minister of Labour and Social Affairs.
Addressing a meeting of ministers in-charge of Social Affairs from GCC countries here, Al Subei said social problems facing GCC societies must be addressed effectively to ward off social risks.
She said a decision must also be taken at this meeting on developing a general framework for measuring quality indices of social care in GCC member-states, particularly with regard to social care provided to people with special needs.
Also needed are guidelines for assessing the contribution of civil societies to the local economy and society, she said.
Yesterday’s ministerial meet was presided over by H E Abdullah Saleh Mubarak Al Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of Labour and Social Affairs (pictured).
He said in his opening speech that the agenda of the meeting had several issues to be discussed and those included child and family issues.
Child and family issues are the core issues, he said.
Later, he honoured various NGOs active in various social fields in the GCC for their contribution to
society.
Among the NGOs felicitated was Qatar Society for fighting Cancer headed by Dr (Sheikh) Khalid bin Jabr Al Thani.
