Scholarships for Qataris in 831 universities

DOHA: Qatari students seeking scholarship to pursue higher studies will be able to select among 831 universities in 33 countries in the 2015-2016 academic year. 
The Supreme Council of Education (SEC) has chosen the universities from Arab, American and European countries, including 346 in the US and 92 in the UK, Al Sharq reports. 
The list of universities is updated every two years to provide students with alternatives. 
Other countries specified by the SEC include GCC states, Turkey, Switzerland, Sweden, Portugal, Holland, Norway, Italy, Ireland, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, China, Australia, Iran and India. 
Students can chose universities in the GCC states if their preferred specialisation is not available in the country. 
The scholarship office at Higher Education Institute, SEC, is responsible for implementing scholarship programmes to support students for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the best education institutions in Qatar and around the world. 
To be eligible for scholarship, an applicant should be Qatari, must have a high school certificate or its equivalent in the past five years, must have an average of 75 marks in all subjects, especially in English language or four points in IELTS.
Scholarship recipient must not have a degree similar to the required degree. 
The SEC said scholarships approval is competitive in terms of grades and the number of seats available for each major, depending on the state’s needs and scholarships plans.
It said scholarships will not include top-up bachelor’s degree, compressed crash courses, partial programmes and distance education.
Higher Education Institute has expanded general criteria for scholarships and conditions for scholarships for Qataris to study English and other languages. 
It has also elaborated on criteria for scholarships for Academic Bridge Programme in Qatar, diploma from College of the North Atlantic Qatar, bachelor’s degree in local universities, the foundation year in the UK, community colleges in the US and the bachelor’s degree abroad.
