DOHA: The Sri Lankan expatriates team lifted the trophy in a cricket tournament organised by the Ministry of Interior as part of Eid celebrations.
The six-nation tournament was held between Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Nepalese and Qatari teams on the first and second days of Eid.
In the final match, the Sri Lankan team beat the Qatari team and won the ‘Eid Al Fitr 2015 Six Nations Cricket Tournament.’
Colonel Abdullah Khalifa Al Muftah, Director, Public Relations Department at the ministry, presented the trophy to the winning team.
The ministry also organised two mega events, especially for single workers in Asian Town and Barwa Workers Recreation Complex in Al Khor.
Events at the complex included performances by artists from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, orchestra teams of Popins and Sariga, and traditional songs and dances.
Safety, security and traffic awareness programmes were also held by ministry officials. Awareness films were shown to educate the public on traffic and pedestrian rules, fire safety and Qatari traditions.
Cultural events in Al Khor started at 5pm and ended at 10pm on the first and second days of Eid. The closing ceremony at the complex was attended by Col. Al Muftah and Lt. Col. Ahmad Zayed Al Mohannadi, Director, Community Police Department.
Over 2,000 gifts were distributed by the ministry through raffle draw.
Earlier, the ministry had organised Ramadan Sports Tournaments for companies in Barwa recreation city and Ras Laffan. Some 60 teams participated in cricket, football, basketball and tug-of-war.
In the cricket final, City Engineering Company defeated CCC Sumaisamah. In football final, Med Gulf grabbed the championship against Carillion Qatar and in tug-of-war final, N Kom Tiger defeated City Engineering.
Col. Al Muftah said it was the third annual event the ministry organised on the occasion of Eid. The ministry always cares to keep communication with all communities throughout the year by holding cultural and entertainment activities and awareness programmes, he added.
