Awqaf Undersecretary underscores mosques' constructive societal roles

Doha, Qatar: Undersecretary of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs H E Dr. Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Thani stressed the importance of activating the role of mosques and strengthening their advocacy and social message, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

He said during the holy month, mosques across the country witness a large number of worshipers for all prayers, especially in Tarawih and Qiyam prayers.

He was speaking at a meeting of mosque management officials with imams, preachers and muezzins, as part of the ministry’s preparations for the holy month of Ramadan 2025.

The meeting was held in the Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Mosque on Tuesday, February 18, with the attendance of about 2,500 imams, preachers and muezzins.

Sheikh Khalid said that the Ministry pays great attention to activating the message of the mosque and enhancing its role in society, pointing out that mosques are beacons of knowledge, advocacy, and guidance, and contribute to achieving societal cohesion by consolidating Islamic values and spreading the culture of tolerance and moderation.

The Undersecretary pointed out the great status of the imam, preacher and muezzin in Islam, as they carry a lofty religious and humanitarian message, represented in raising the rituals of the true religion, conveying its teachings and manners and educating the segments of society according to a moderate and balanced Islamic approach.

He stressed the importance of their constructive role in educating worshippers and members of society, teaching them the rules of fasting and zakat, and urging them to adhere to the teachings of the true religion and the etiquette of the holy month, through good lessons and sermons that focus on Islamic values and noble morals.

Dr. Suleiman Jumaan Al Qahtani, Director of the Mosques Management Department, said the ministry is keen to ensure that Friday sermons and religious lessons presented in mosques are consistent with the approach of moderation and balance, which contributes to promoting human values and virtuous morals among all segments of society.
