Doha: As part of its large-scale relief intervention funded by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS) has initiated a program to support health centers in western Mosul, Iraq, with medications, medical supplies, and furniture.
Conducted in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the program is estimated to benefit 162,600 Iraqi in eight districts of the war-damaged city.
QRCS's program will meet the pressing needs of these health centers, which were critically affected by the ongoing military operations in Mosul.
Over the past three months, QRCS's relief intervention helped as many as 95,915 people out of the total 96,864 internally displaced people (IDPs).
The aid provisions included 1,300 food packages for 7,800 people and 5,693 parcels of winterization items and tarpaulins for 33,858 people.
Other activities were the operation of three health centers to serve 39,257 people (nearly 400 per day) at IDP camps, as well as securing potable water, garbage boxes and vehicles, and hygiene promotion measures for 15,000 inhabitants of the Khazir camp.
In anticipation of mass evacuations from eastern Mosul, QRCS teams began field assessment of basic needs in the expected destination, southern Mosul. They visited the district health center and identified its shortages in medical consumables and equipment.
Plans are considered to establish a makeshift hospital to receive the extra possible IDPs.
Under the Warm Winter Campaign 2016-17, 250 packages of basic nonfood items (NFIs) to the inhabitants of Al-Jadaa camp in Qayyarah, southern Mosul. This winterization aid included mattresses, blankets, heaters, fuel packs, full kitchenware sets, plastic mats, cookers, solar lamps, and water flasks. Also, complete hygiene kits were handed over to families, each lasting for one month.
