Beirut: Lebanese President Michel Aoun has designated the academic and former education minister Hassan Diab to be the country's next prime minister.
"I will work for a government that meets the expectations of all Lebanese," Diab said on Thursday after meeting the president.
The move is aimed at ending a stalemate in Lebanon, which has been gripped by nationwide protests since October 17, leading to the resignation of ex-premier Saad Hariri.
Diab got 69 votes from the 128 parliament members, while 42 lawmakers abstained.
