Some 136 nominees from over thirty countries have submitted for Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding (SHATIU) 2017. The number of nominees has doubled comparing to the previous year with 87 nominees.
The deadline for the award was on August 31, and all judging committees have started evaluation of the submitted translation works.
Commenting on the significant increase of nominees and new categories of awards, Dr Hanan Al Fayadh, the Award’s Media Consultant, said some 27 nominees have submitted their contributions and thus the number of competitors for the single book translation awards has rose from 87 to 109 nominees under the new categories.
The judging committees started assessment process two days ago and more precisely on September 17, the President of the Award added.
The total amount of the awards has been increased from $1m to $2m and the French Language has been selected as second language alongside English language for the awards of the books translation.
SHATIU 2017 has three major categories, including translation prizes, which are subdivided into the following; translation from Arabic into English, translation from English into Arabic, translation from Arabic into a language other than English, translation from a language other than English into Arabic. Winner of the first prize in this category is awarded (US$100.000),the second (US$60.000) and the third (US$40.000).
The second category is achievement prizes, awarded to translations from Arabic into languages and includes 10 sub-categories of translation from Arabic to Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Persian and Urdu and vice-versa and each will have a prize of $100,000. Whiel the is for that the third category has Prize for International Understanding and awarded to individual(s) and/or institution(s) with substantive contribution to building a culture of peace and promoting international understanding and its total value is $200,000.
