DOHA: Patrol teams from the Ministry of Environment and Lekhwiya have so far this year registered 130 violations of camel grazing ban in inland deserts and open grounds.
Camel grazing is a main cause of ecological degradation in the deserts where plants are destroyed. Grazing has been banned and recently when it ended, Minister of Environment H E Ahmed Amer Mohamed Al Humaidi extended it from August 24 this year to August 23, 2017.
Internal security force Lekhwiya was roped in by the ministry and their patrol teams launched a joint campaign to comb inland desert areas and open lands and catch violators.
Some 130 were caught in the first eight months and referred to public prosecution.
Experts say since the ban was imposed, many plants and trees have grown in desert areas.
Considering the impact of the ban and the importance of ensuring it is complied with, the inspection drive is likely to continue in an effective way. Owners and breeders are asked to keep and feed camels in their farms.
