DOHA: The Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior held a meeting yesterday with officers working in detention centres.
The meeting was intended to brief the mechanism adopted by the department to endorse its fundamental functions to ensure protecting human rights of prisoners and detainees, said Lieutenant Colonel Saad Salim Al Dousari, Assistant Director of Human Rights Department.
He said that Act No 26 of 2005, establishing the Human Rights Department, was tasked with receiving, reviewing and investigating complaints of human rights violations to the Ministry of the Interior by individuals.
He also said that the Human Rights Department has taken the initiative to develop a monitoring mechanism to revise and conduct survey at detention places and penal institutions, to be more adapted to national and international standards.
