The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday kicked off the “Brigada Eskwela,” an annual school maintenance activity to help ensure that public elementary and high schools nationwide will be ready in time for the school opening on June 1.
DepEd Sec. Armin A. Luistro, who led the activity at the Numancia Central Elementary School in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, said, ”this school maintenance effort engages all education stakeholders to contribute their time, effort and resources in ensuring that public school facilities are prepared in time for the forthcoming school opening.” Luistro also visited various public elementary and secondary school buildings in General Luna town, where he was joined by Mayor Jaime P. Rusillon as well as DepEd, provincial and local officials and teachers in the clean-up activity.
Elsewhere. teachers, parents, pupils, civic groups, volunteer and even members of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) picked up brooms, paint brushes, washed walls and started cleaning the surroundings and classrooms in public schools nationwide.
They paint classrooms, repaired furnitures and cleaned up the school grounds, with materials and supplies donated by the parents or by private businesses and foundations.
The “Brigada Eskwela” 2015, also known as the National Schools Maintenance Week will end on Saturday, May 23.
“We encourage you Siargaonons and Surigaonons to continue this program all year around,” said Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol F. Matugas.
