The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), in cooperation with the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI), held a symposium entitled “The Right to a Healthy, Sound and Sustainable Environment in the State of Qatar.”
In his opening speech, Deputy Chairman of NHRC, Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, said the symposium was one of the fruits of cooperation between the NHRC and the DI and that it came within the celebration of the Arab Human Rights Day and as an affirmation that human rights were at the core of the Arab-Islamic culture that we are proud of.
He added human rights is not a foreign or imported concept in our societies, pointing out that human rights constituted one of the main things that enable the Arab person to advance his reality for the better in accordance with the requirements of noble human values.
DI President Dr. Abdul Wahab Al Affendi praised the environmental policy in the State of Qatar and said it encouraged interest in human rights on the one hand and environment on the other, which was an old concern and had well-established roots, stressing that the focus on environmental human rights must be the concern of everyone. The symposium concluded with reviewing the efforts of governmental, national, and non-governmental agencies and companies in Qatar in the field of protecting the right to a healthy environment and highlighting the most important successes and challenges facing its protection.
