DOHA: Qatar will today dispatch five trucks of emergency aid to the war-torn areas in Yemen.
The aid was collected through a week long humanitarian campaign in Qatar coordinated by the Doha office of the Islamic Dawah Organisation.
The consignment contains food items including rice and sugar and dates, clothes, school bags, among other items.
The campaign launched six days ago evoked a tremendous response from philanthropists in Qatar, Al Sharq reported, quoting Ahmed Saleh, coordinator of the campaign, who will be accompanying the consignment.
The aid will be distributed in areas set free from Houthi rebels. Islamic Dawah Organisation will coordinate with two charitable organisations, Al Wafa and Al Firdous in distributing the aid.
The materials will go to support the displaced people in Yemen, widows, orphans and the needy.
Some 21 million people — over 80 percent of Yemen’s population — require immediate help, according to the United Nations, which warns that the country is on the brink of famine.
More than a million have been displaced by months of violence. Even before the conflict began, over half the population lacked access to safe drinking water, and Yemen’s child malnutrition rates ranked among the world’s worst.
Hammad Abdul Khader Al Shaikh, director of the the Organisation’s Doha office, appreciated the support from the Qatari donors saying they are always in the forefront to
support needy people all over
the world.
He said hospitals in Yemen are in dire need of medicines and equipment and hoped that another consignment would be sent to Yemen from Qatar
carrying medicines.
