DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has completed a comprehensive study on rainfall rates in Qatar and is conducting another study on areas vulnerable to flooding and associated risks.
The study ‘Data and Rainwater Fall Averages, Flood Risk and Establishment of Infrastructure Data Bank’ by the Infrastructure Planning Department would help in calculation of rates and intensity of rainwater fall, which is indispensable for the design of high-end networks consistent with climatic conditions of the country, the ministry said yesterday. Phase one of the study has been completed.
Phase two includes preparation of ‘Qatar Manual for Rainwater Flooding and Averages’ in collaboration with COWI Company.
The department, in cooperation with GHD Company, is conducting a study on incidents of rain water flooding in the country, to identify and assess associated risks to the population, land and properties, develop mechanisms for averting possible damage and identify flood risk areas. The department has also established a ‘data bank’ comprising statistics relating to infrastructure, geo-technical and hydro-geological works, at the national level. Data would be used for current and future projects, and as a guide or for comparative uses. The Peninsula
