LONDON: Alex Ferguson’s (pictured) first team sheet as Manchester United manager is to go under the hammer and could sell for between £2,000 and £3,000, auctioneers said yesterday.
The hand-written team sheet from November 8, 1986 is to be sold on behalf of an Oxford United fan, who was given it by former player Peter Rhoades-Brown.
Oxford United won the encounter at the Manor Ground 2-0 in front of 13,500 fans.
The club were League Cup winners in 1986 but declined in spectacular fashion after relegation from the old Division One in 1988 and dropped into the part-time Conference in 2006.
They were promoted last season and this campaign begin in the fourth tier League Two.
Ferguson and Manchester United went on from strength to strength, winning a string of honours including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and the Champions League twice until his retirement in May.
The team sheet will be sold at Henry Aldridge and Son in Devizes, southwest England, on June 22.
Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said new regulations governing what European football clubs can spend in relation to their means are good for the game. In comments published yesterday the new rules will force teams to think more carefully about whom they sign,
Mourinho, who was reappointed coach at the west London club earlier this month, described UEFA’s financial fair play regulations as “very motivational” and helpful for greater cohesion within a club.
“You have to think more about every decision and every move,” the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss was quoted as saying on chelseafc.com.
“Every wrong move you make has an influence on the future. You need to work more closely with the board in the financial area, you have to have a different perspective and a different look at the players on loan and youth football.” Agencies
