DOHA: Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) will commemorate World No Tobacco Day International on May 31 to raise awareness about dangers of smoking and its role in increasing the incidence of cancer.
Presentations entitled ‘Cigarette trial’ have been made at schools on dangers of smoking and negative effects of a smoker’s life. Among people aged 15 and above, some 12 percent admitted smoking tobacco in 2014, up 10 percent from 2013, shows Global Adult Tobacco Study. According to Global Youth Tobacco Survey, nearly 10 percent of 13-15-year-olds in Qatar smoke cigarettes, up from 6.5 percent in 2007. While in 2007, some 2.3 percent of girls aged 13-15 said they smoked cigarette, the figure has risen to 4.7 percent. Among boys of the same age, the number of cigarette smokers increased by 1.5 percentage points, from 13.4 percent in 2007 to 14.9 percent in 2014.
