DOHA: Amlak, the Qatari holding company which manages a portfolio of assets, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), through the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency, ‘Tarsheed’.
It aims to strengthen both sides’ common interest in preserving natural resources, particularly conservation and efficient use of water and electricity in the tourism industry for economic and social benefits of present and future generations.
Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, President, Kahramaa, said: “We are committed to providing the highest levels of care for the country’s wealth, resources, and sustainability without negatively affecting the environment, which is a main pillar of sustainability in Qatar’s national agenda.
“Kahramaa, through Tarsheed, has implemented conservation, energy and water efficiency projects by adopting and implementing initiatives on related to regulations, standards, laws, social awareness, and renewable energy technology, and collaborating with authorities.”
Ali M Al Ali, Manager, Customer Services, Conservation and Energy Efficiency,  Kahramaa, said: “Collaboration with Amlak and Tarsheed provides an excellent opportunity for both entities to raise the bar when it comes to efficient energy use in the tourism sector; one of our goals to achieve a 35 percent reduction in water and 20 percent in electricity use per person. We are following the best practice standards of developed countries that are adopting and implementing green tourism systems.”
Abdul Aziz Al Emadi, CEO, Amlak, said: “It is a necessity for us to be associated with Kahramaa. As a responsible Qatari business with sustainability at the core of our operations, the MoU will enable us to further increase our role in protecting the environment for our children and the future generations. Our colleagues will benefit from insights provided by Tarsheed, and implement successful sustainability models in our organisation and its entities.”
Amlak and Kahramaa will join together on projects to promote energy efficiency, environmental protection and energy consumption conservation.
Under Tarsheed, a new award category will be announced later this year. Tarsheed will also host events related to the award at Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), which is operated by Amlak.
Both sides will form a committee to provide technical solutions, conduct energy audits and educate industries to become more energy efficient.  Kahramaa will engage Tarsheed to develop training programmes on energy efficiency practices for the Amlak operations team at QNCC.
In recognition of its sustainability accomplishments, QNCC was presented with the Best Conserving Building Award by Tarsheed earlier this year.
