Doha: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has concluded the training workshop, “The European Union and Human Rights: Fundamentals, Visions and Expectations” conducted in cooperation with the Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European Parliament.
Hamad Salem Al Hajri, Director of the Programmes and Education Department of the NHRC, said: “The workshop is the first of many diverse training workshops that the NHRC will present during the coming period, in cooperation with human rights organisations, for the benefit of government agencies and civil society organisations in Qatar.”
“The workshop comes within the framework of fruitful cooperation with all actors in the field of human rights. The workshop also aims to learn about the European human rights system, promote and protect human rights, and discuss current and future challenges,” he added.
Al Hajri praised the cooperation of the attendees and the discussions included in the workshop, stressing that the training provided the participants with a lot of knowledge related to the European human rights system.
For his part, Dr. Nicolo Vega Talamanca, Secretary-General of No Peace Without Justice, and the main lecturer of the workshop, lauded the labour law reforms and the regulation of entry, exit and residency of expatriates.
He said Qatar has achieved massive changes regarding the conditions of migrant workers, not only in the physical conditions, health care, housing and its requirements, and the inspection of housing sites and workplaces, but the reforms included more significant fundamental changes.
Talamanca added: “The reforms undertaken by Qatar during the past five years were in accordance with the laws issued by the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. It has become a relationship between the recruiter and the recruitee, not just a relationship between the company and the recruiter, but a relationship with the entire Qatari community.”
Talamanca also stressed the importance of sustaining these reforms and changes.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Al Hajri honoured 60 trainees who participated in the four-day training.
A number of government agencies participated in the training workshop, including human rights organisations in the Ministries of Labour, Interior, Culture, Public Health, Environment and Climate Change, as well as Qatar Media Foundation, Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Cultural Village Foundation “Katara”, and many others.
