DOHA: Work is continuing in full swing on the first phase of Al Rayyan Road Upgrade project, the Public Works Authority – Ashghal — said yesterday.
The project is considered an important step to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion in this vital area, Ashghal said yesterday.
The first phase extends about 2.9km  west of Khalid bin Abdullah Al Attiyah Roundabout (New Al Rayyan Roundabout) to the east of Bani Hajer Roundabout.
The phase, implementation of which started last July,  includes construction of four lanes in each direction, separated by a median and construction of about 2km of side roads and about 5.8km of service roads.
Serving important residential areas and public entities such as the Education City, universities and schools at Qatar Foundation, the first phase also includes construction of three interchanges: Al Wajba Interchange between Al Rayyan Road and Al Wajba Street, Al Shafi Interchange between Al Rayyan Road and Al Shafi Street (two-level interchange), and Al Qalah Interchange between Al Rayyan Road and Al Qalah Street (two-level interchange).
The first phase will also involve major infrastructure improvements, including storm water drainage network, treated sewage effluent networks and upgrades to electrical and telecommunication networks.
Ashghal started concrete works for Cable Tunnel 1 March 3 this year.
Workers began pouring concrete of the first foundation slab of the Cable Tunnel, which is a box-type structure with dimensions of about 6x6x700 metres, into which all electrical lines will be transferred.
For this section of the tunnel, 160 cubic metres of concrete and 31 tonnes of steel reinforcement were used.
The first phase of the project will involve a total of 270,000 cubic metres of concrete and 20,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement.
Local materials are used in the project and concrete and steel reinforcement are supplied by local companies to promote local businesses and achieve a sustainable economy for the country.
The first phase of project is implemented by the joint venture of Six Construct Qatar Ltd WLL and Boom Construction Company and is expected to be completed in Q1 of 2017.
The project will also provide service roads and pedestrian and cycle paths to encourage citizens and residents to walk and ride.
The project falls within the Expressway programme, implemented by Ashghal since 2012.
The programme includes dozens of projects for main roads and highways and aims to build a network of about 1,000km of developed and sustainable roads, about 360 bridges and 240 intersections covering Doha City, main towns and external areas across Qatar.
