Qatar elected to Unesco Executive Board

Doha:  Qatar won the membership of Unesco Executive Board for the next four years. The voting took place during the 38th General Conference which is under way in Paris. Among eight Arab countries, Oman, Lebanon and Sudan also elected besides Qatar. Qatar’s membership came after continued efforts that lasted for several months by ministers, institutions and office of Unesco special envoy for basic and higher education H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, said Secretary General of Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science, Dr Hamda Hassan Al Sulaiti. 
Dr Hamda Al Sulaiti lauded the role of the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage which implemented events that highlighted Qatar’s modern renaissance. She also referred to efforts of Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science which led Qatar’s winning a majority of 121 votes out of 193.
Dr Al Sulaiti underlined that the step contributes to deepening relations between Qatar and Unesco and other member states.
The Unesco Executive Board comprises 50 states elected by the general conference. It prepares agenda of sessions held by general conference, discusses the organisation’s programmes and budget estimates submitted by the director-general to the general conference with recommendations and elects the director-general.
