Doha: Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) organised a workshop ‘Awareness to Prevent Cable Damages & Adopt Best Safety Practices’ for main contractors, consultants, safety officers and personnel supervising excavation activities.
The workshop was mainly for personnel from utilities and organisations involved in national infrastructure development projects. It focused on causes and effects of external (third party) cable damage and how to prevent it.
The electricity distribution faults analysis committee studied statistics and after analysis it was observed that a large percentage of faults are caused by “damage to underground cables of KM network” by external agencies/third parties.
KM faults committee also analysed data and found a sharp increase in number of faults due to “damage to underground cables” in the past three years.
The workshop was part of an initiative of the distribution faults committee to reduce the number of cables being damaged and faults caused by such damage.
Kahramaa aims to abide with its vision and commitment to ‘provide uninterrupted power supply to consumers by reducing interruptions caused by external cable damage.
The workshop also discussed regulatory and mandatory procedures to be followed before taking up any excavation work. The workshop served as guidance for safe digging practices to avoid danger from spiking high-voltage cables. One of the outcomes of the workshop was increase in cultural and technical awareness about safety of cables when executing projects.
The Peninsula
