LONDON: Midfielder Azeem Azam, a Briton of Asian origin, is the subject of transfer speculation among football clubs in the Middle East and Russia, it emerged yesterday.

Agents of the 28-year-old have had talks with club officials in Russia and Qatar, his camp has confirmed. Azam’s camp, however, refused to divulge  the names of Qatar Stars League (QSL) sides that may be interested in signing the midfielder.

The former Real Betis player is also being pursued with interest from football sides in the UAE and Kuwait.

Azam spent most part of this year training in the Middle East. The young Briton also had brief spells with Major League Soccer (MLS) sides DC United and LA Galaxy.

Azam’s career has been hampered by knee injuries but offers for the 28-year-old have also popped up from Italy and Hungary, Azam’s camp said without elaborating.

Azam began his career at Nottingham Forest but moved to Leeds United at age 16. The Briton later moved to MLS to train and recover from injuries, but his stay in the US proved to be a brief one.

Having staged a complete recovery from a series of knee injuries, Azam is now aiming for a fresh start, his camp said. AGENCIES
