WASHINGTON: The United States is going to supply additional military aid to the Iraqi government following the fall of a key city to the Daesh organization.
Daesh militants seized government offices and police headquarters in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Friday.
Their fighters entered the central part of Ramadi and raised their black flag after a month of fierce fighting with government forces. The insurgents used suicide car bombings and mortar attacks in their raids on the main city of Anbar province.
After Ramadi fell, US Vice President Joe Biden and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi talked over the telephone.
The White House said that Biden promised to expedite US aid to Iraqi forces, including delivery of rocket launchers to counter rebel car bomb attacks.
The Iraqi government has sent reinforcements including special operation forces to counter the rebel offensive.
