Doha, Qatar: The Qatar National Day celebrations are an extraordinary occasion for the government and the people of Qatar to feel proud and enjoy all the achievements and the progress the country has made over the years, said Ambassador of Portugal to Qatar H E Paulo Neves Pocinho.
In a message on Qatar National Day, the Ambassador noted that with a clear vision to further development and wellbeing of its citizens and residents, Qatar leadership has charted a path for the country as an agent for peace, stability and security in the world.
“In this context, Qatar’s foreign policy has been strategically crafted to promote peace and security at the regional as well as global level. It has been a very consistent and successful agent in many mediation processes, bringing thus important contributions to world peace. Today, Qatar is seen as a reliable and honest player, always open to collaborate with partners when opportunity arises to promote peace.”
He added, “This is a country that reflects the strong character and will of its people, full of energy and vigor, a youthful country. It is also a country where the Arab tradition of warmly welcoming visitors, guests and friends is always present. In Qatar, we really feel at home, we are brothers.” He further said that Qatar is recognized in the international community as a fundamental cooperation for development partner, a major sector relevant to peace and security in the world. “It is also noteworthy to underline the important role of Qatar in the multilateral agenda to promote education and the protection of education in conflict situations.”
The Ambassador further said, “Under the leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar has been able to balance economic development with human and societal values, such as the protection of the family, women empowerment, the protection of the children and the most vulnerable, and education.”
“Recently, Qatar hosted the Football U17 World Cup, where I was able to enjoy the victory of the young players from my country, the first time Portugal won this cup. I am sure these young Portuguese players will always have Qatar close to their hearts, thus creating a bond that will endure overtime.” The Ambassador noted that Qatar enjoys a high reputation for staging major sports competitions, like the World Cup 2022, and other international events, like the recent United Nations Summit for Social Development and the Doha Forum, a major international event where the world dynamics are discussed in frank and open debates.
He said, “Portugal and Qatar enjoy a bilateral relation grounded in a deep friendship, trust and common values, such as promotion of multilateralism, peace and security, and the international rules based order. Within the international community both countries act as bridge builders, always open to dialogue, ready to listen to the other, able to understand the different views on any issue.”
