Director-General of the General Directorate of Endowments Eng Hassan bin Abdullah Al Marzouqi
Doha, Qatar: The General Directorate of Endowments at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has received a new cash endowment worth QR2m from a philanthropist for the ‘Waqf Al Wuqoof’ endowment under the Waqf for Righteousness and Piety fund.
The endowment is subject to a condition that its returns be reinvested to establish a new endowment every year, creating a sustainable cycle of asset growth and ensuring that the benefits of the original endowment continue to expand over time.
The latest contribution is also a continuation of the donor’s previous charitable giving. According to the General Directorate of Endowments’ records, the donor had previously registered endowments in the form of cash and shares, reflecting an ongoing commitment to supporting the endowment sector and allocating part of his wealth to charitable assets whose benefits can continue for generations.
Director-General of the General Directorate of Endowments Eng Hassan bin Abdullah Al Marzouqi, said the new endowment reflects the deep-rooted culture of waqf in Qatari society and the continued willingness of benefactors to diversify their charitable contributions.
He said such contributions help expand the endowment asset base and strengthen its capacity to serve the community in accordance with the conditions set by donors.
Al Marzouqi added that, within the framework of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs’ 2025–2030 strategic plan, the General Directorate of Endowments is working to support the development of a sustainable endowment and zakat system that strengthens social solidarity, while increasing endowment returns and enhancing the value of assets to ensure sustainable resources and long-term impact.
He noted that these efforts are aligned with the Ministry’s drive to promote awareness of endowments and wills and reinforce their importance in society, while developing the management of endowment assets to preserve and grow them in line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 for sustainable development and efficient resource management.
The Director-General stressed that the General Directorate continues to develop and invest endowment assets in accordance with Shariah controls and approved institutional standards, while adhering to donors’ conditions, which form the basis for determining how endowment assets and their returns are utilised.
He further said the continued practice of donors adding new endowments to their existing charitable assets represents a form of renewed giving that contributes to the accumulation of endowment assets and expands the resources available to address community needs in the long term. The Waqf for Righteousness and Piety is one of the endowment funds with broad areas of charitable and humanitarian activity. Its resources are directed towards various forms of good in accordance with donors’ conditions, supporting social solidarity and priority areas of need.
The ‘Waqf Al Wuqoof’ initiative is part of this fund and is based on the concept of reinvesting endowment returns to establish new endowments successively. Under this model, the returns generated by an existing endowment are used to create new endowment assets year after year. This expands the endowment asset base and enables newly established waqfs to generate resources and continue providing benefits in the future.
