DOHA: Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a member of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), has announced two winning proposals, awarded to researchers pursuing doctorates at Qatar University, will start this September 2015.
The two researchers are the winners of the third cycle of its Graduate Student Research Award (GSRA) programme.
Aligned with Qatar National Research Strategy, both proposals fall under the Energy and Environment Pillar.
Shoaib Mallick, advised by Dr Farid Touati, is pursuing the project ‘Integrated Acoustoelectronic Sensors for sensing of saline water vapour in natural gas flow’ and Abdul Mannan Rauf, advised by Dr Atif Iqbal, is pursuing the project ‘Development of a novel multilevel unified power controller (M-UPC) for smart grid applications’.
By investing in cutting-edge research, QNRF is enhancing a scientific culture that supports QF on its mission to build Qatar’s innovation and technology capacity and help the state develop as a hub of research excellence through QF’s Science and Research Pillar, QF R&D.
By supporting scholars pursuing doctoral degrees at approved institutions in Qatar, GSRA aims to promote postgraduate education and contribute to human capital development.
“GSRA is a capacity-building programme to allow graduates to gain knowledge and experience in pursuit of a career in research. We believe that providing such opportunities to young scientists is essential for nurturing Qatar’s research talent pool,” said Dr Abdulnasser Al Ansari, Deputy Executive Director, QNRF.
“Through such programmes, QNRF continues to play an active role in helping achieve Qatar National Vision 2030.”
Providing an opportunity for faculty and researchers to identify outstanding graduate students in and outside Qatar, GSRA also provides support for up to four years.
The programme helps ensure continuity of research-based doctoral education while building awareness of local research opportunities.
While the main benefit of GSRA award is to assist in building human capital, it also aims to boost Qatar’s reputation as a budding research hub by offering graduates world-class education to lay firm foundations for a knowledge-based economy.
