Human development report calls for better social protection for elderly people

DOHA: The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics in its fourth Human Development Report has called for amendments of relevant legislation that negatively affects the well-being of elderly people. 

The Report, released today at the Ritz Carlton Doha, has recommended for provision of better social protection for them.DOHA: The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics in its fourth Human Development Report has called for amendments of relevant legislation that negatively affects the well-being of elderly people.

It also calls to spread the culture of rights by improving communication channels and awareness on the rights and duties of people. They could benefit by using government websites for improving their knowledge on public policy and rights.

Senior officials from the state as well as representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) attended the event that takes forward the right to development as per Qatar National Vision 2030.

The Report updates Qatar's progress in human development, identifies the challenges and opportunities to implement the right to development for the country's entire population.

This conforms to the 'Declaration on the Right to Development' that United Nations General Assembly adopted at its 97th Plenary Meeting held December 4, 1986.

The Minister of Development Planning and Statistics HE Dr Saleh bin Mohammed Al Nabit, said: “This report has been prepared in partnership with all stakeholders and the United Nations Development Programme which explains the link between human rights and human development.”

The Minister expressed delight for including in the Report a comprehensive presentation on ways to implement the right to development and recommendations to include some policies enumerated in the second National Development Strategy 2017-2022, reports QNA.

Dr Al Nabit said the report "recommends further efforts to raise public awareness on all forms of violence and abuse, provide appropriate support and calls for the need to improve institutional support for victims of violence".

In conclusion he said, Qatar National Vision 2030 reiterates the State's commitment for responsible development with respect for human rights, and achieve the highest levels of human development.
