DOHA: The growing sports media industry in Qatar and in the region will be one of the taking points during this week’s Sports Media Seminar.
The five-day meeting will be held from April 15 to 18 at Marriott Hotel where Qatar’s popular senior sports journalist Mohammed Al Malki will be joined by top sports journalists from Qatar and the region.
Sports journalists from 12 countries will join their fellow scribes from Doha to talk about Qatar’s rising stature as a sports hub of the region.
“Journalists from Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Oman, Libya, Algeria, Jordan, Palestine, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia will join senior sports journalists from Qatar,” Al Makli, President of Qatar Sports Media Committee (QSMC) said yesterday.
Al Malki, who is also the Vice President at AIPS, said the five-day seminar will discuss ways and means to help junior sports journalists pick up key lessons from their senior colleagues in the region. Al Malki said the seminar is a joint venture of QSMC and Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC).
“This is a very important gathering of some very experienced personalities who will be joined by junior sports journalists,” Al Malki, who has covered numerous Olympic Games and Asian Games in the last three decades, said.
The veteran Qatari sports journalist said with a growing sports calendar, Doha is looking for more hands to cover the internationally popular events the Qatari capital hosts every season.
Sports journalists from the Arab world are expected to deliver key lectures during the seminar, Al Malki said.
Sheikh Saoud bin Albdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary General, QOC, will address the gathering on April 15, Al Malki said.
Professor Mohammed Jamil Abdelkader, President of Arab Union of Sports Press, will also be present during the seminar.
QOC’s Saad Al Rumaihi and sports commentator Yousef Saif will join TV personality Majid Khulaifi for lectures during the five-day seminar.
Those attending the seminar will be taken around the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club before being hosted to a gala dinner.
Others who will be delivering lectures include Salim Al Habsi, Mohammad Qasim, Radwan Zayata, Majid Asila, Mohammed Al Marri and Saad Al-Otaibi, Faisal Qenaei.
