Aqaba: The governor of Aqaba city in southern Jordan, Ayman Al-Awaisheh, announced that 14 people were affected by cases of suffocation and difficulty breathing following a minor ammonia gas leak at the industrial complex in the city today. The Jordanian News Agency 'Petra' quoted Al-Awaishea as saying that 4 cases were transferred by the Civil Defense to hospitals for treatment, while the remaining injuries were treated on-site within the internal clinics of the complex.
He explained that the gas leak occurred during routine maintenance work at the industrial complex, while specialized teams managed to control the incident. Al-Awaishea added that the concerned authorities carried out precautionary evacuation measures to safe points within the facility premises, in anticipation of any developments. Meanwhile, Nedal Al Ouran Commissioner for Environmental and Public Safety Affairs at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, stated that the relevant teams in the authority, in coordination with the competent bodies, dealt with the incident according to public safety procedures and the approved emergency plan, confirming that the situation is fully under control.
Al Ouran added that the specialized teams continue to complete the safety procedures and ensure the readiness of the site, in preparation for resuming work in the coming period, noting that the environmental and air readings and tests conducted in the area showed the safety of the air and the absence of any environmental pollution.
