DOHA: A faculty team of Qatar University’s College of Law (LAWC) has won a grant of over $500,000 to conduct research on Qatar’s legal preparedness to organise the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
This was disclosed by LAWC’s Dean Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi while highlighting the key achievements of the College during a press conference.
The grant was awarded by the National Priorities Research Programme (NPRP), the flagship funding programme of the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF).
“This is an important achievement for the College which puts our expertise in focus in preparation for such a critical event for Qatar”, said Al Khulaifi.
Major achievements during the academic year 2014-2015 also included the launch of two new graduate programmes for Fall 2015 — a Master’s in Private Law and one in Public Law, and the establishment of a number of professional development courses in cooperation with QU Continuing Education Office (CEO) such as the Qatari HR Law, English Legal Terminology, and many more.
The College’s Legal Clinic Unit provides students with practical training on real-life scenarios, legal aid, and legal consultative expertise, while Law French Club was established to conduct various cultural and social activities in order to spread the French legal culture within QU community and the Qatari society.
He noted the College’s efforts in fostering an excellent research environment that stimulates creativity and innovation through collaborations with academic organisations from the private and public sectors and with researchers from institutions in Qatar and beyond.
The College’s Center for Energy and Sustainability Law (CESL) successfully achieved $34,000 grant from Qatar Petroleum Development Co Ltd (QPD).
He commended the Center’s contribution to enhancing research productivity in the College through notable events such as the seminars on “Energy Dispute Resolution” (February 2015) and “Energy Security” (May 2015).
Dr Al Khulaifi also pointed at the College’s community service activities that are reflected in the number of outreach programmes and initiatives such as the launch of the series on new legislation on Qatar’s new cybercrime law, and the drafting of the English version of the Qatari cybercrime law and of the policy for the new legislation initiative of Qatar Ministry of Justice.
He also noted that the College is contributing to providing its students with a wide range of forums to boost their professional development such as the Gulf Certified Arbitrators course, and the Students-Alumni Legal Debate organised by the College’s Professional Career Office.
“LAWC continues to implement a number of strategies to ensure its students’ competitiveness for the fast-growing labour market, and offers learning and research experiences that unlock their potential, motivating them towards academic and professional excellence,” Dr Al Khulaifi said.
LAWC Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr Yasser Khalaileh, Associate Dean for Research Dr Francis Botchway, and Associate Dean of Outreach and Engagement Dr Yassin Elshazly were also present at the press conference.
