QU architecture students receive awards for their final projects

Doha: Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (DAUP) students at Qatar University (QU), in collaboration with the Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB), have been recognised for their final projects — the AEB Architectural Award for Best Design and the College of Engineering (CENG) Award for Best Senior Project. 

The ceremony was opened by DAUP’s Head of Department, Dr. Raffaello Furlan, who honoured this year’s senior group for their dedication and talent. 

Sponsor of the AEB Competition and influential local architect, Ibrahim Jaidah urged the students to continue learning and not shy away from competition.

“The greatest value lies in learning the taste of competition. Just by entering, you are already a winner. Your generation is going to make a big difference in whatever you get involved in.” 

Lolwa Al Mohannadi, supervised by Arch Francisco Trujillo, presented her work on the Hewaya Cultural Arts Hub, which will be the first-of-its-kind destination for cultural art in Qatar that targets people interested in Arabic calligraphy and poetry, ceramic pottery-making, all under one roof. Lolwa won first place in both the AEB Competition and the CENG Senior Competition for her outstanding design.

Doha Elsaman, supervised by Arch Trujillo, presented her work on Twazon Hub, which is a development that aims to help people to maintain their work-life balance in a flexible, collaborative and fun environment encouraging people from different professional backgrounds to enhance their mental and physical health, and career and to make them feel a part of the community. 

Elsaman claimed second and third place in the AEB and CENG Senior competitions, respectively.

Fatima Al Emadi, supervised by Dr. Rashid Al Matwi, presented her project entitled, “Senses Wellness and Therapy Centre” which seeks to gather all services and activities of (physical, medical, mental and social) to encourage people to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle. 

Fatima was awarded third place in the AEB Competition.

Fatima Al Mohannadi, supervised by Arch Jasbir Bhamra showcased her Al Nassia Reformation Jail which seeks to promote inmates’ rehabilitation viewing it as a healing process based on positive behavioural change.

The senior students were also addressed by the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Khalid Kamal Naji, who expressed his pride in the students, referring to the ever-growing reputation and influence of former students of DAUP.
