DOHA: Tourism officials of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have agreed on the need to act fast to benefit mutually from upcoming mega-events in the region.
Undersecretaries to tourism ministers and chairpersons of tourism authorities in the GCC are in Doha to set action plans to support development within tourism
in the Gulf.
On the first day of their meeting yesterday, the tourism officials focused on exploring mechanisms to enhance intra-GCC tourism, while building on the success of the Cruise Arabia Alliance, a regional collaboration that is strengthening the Gulf’s position as a cruise destination.
Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) Chairman Issa bin Mohamed Al Mohannadi opened the meeting by encouraging the officials to speed up joint GCC action to ensure all member states benefit from mega events coming to the region in the coming decade, such as Dubai Expo 2020 and the FIFA World Cup 2022.
The officials also laid the groundwork for a regular GCC Handicrafts Exhibition, the first edition of which will be hosted by Qatar.
