Scholarships to be offered at university fair

DOHA: Qatar has emerged as one of the fastest growing education recruitment hubs in the region due to the extensive scholarship programmes annually offered to students and government employees.

Dr Khalid Mohammed Al Horr, Director of the Higher Education Institute at the ministry said that the most popular study abroad destinations among Qatari students is the UK followed by the US and Australia. The most preferred discipline is engineering and most of the seats in the announced fields have been allocated for this specialisation, said Al Horr.

He was speaking at a press conference held to announce details of the seventh Qatar International Universities Fair 2016 that will take place here from October 17 to 19 with participation of more than 90 local and international universities.

Al Horr said 46 percent of the scholarships offered by the Ministry have been directed to local universities, 35 percent to universities in the UK, 13 percent to institutions in the US, and 6 per cent to universities in a number of other countries.  Al Horr said he ministry will start receiving application for the third batch of scholarships on December 1, this year.

A total of 787 applications were received in the current batch and 539 were approved and 156 applicants were asked to complete their documents. Only 92 applications were rejected for failure to meet the conditions. The ministry is still receiving applications for post-graduate studies.

According to the Qatar Higher Education Study Abroad Data of the Unesco Institute for Statistics 2016, there are a total of 5,039 Qatari students studying abroad for a degree in higher education.

The seventh Qatar International Universities Fair 2016 at the Qatar National Convention Centre will provide a good opportunity for the participating institutions to introduce their international degree programmes and postgraduate programmes to thousands of students, said Dr Al Horr.

Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammed bin Abdul Wahed Ali Al Hammadi will open the fair.

Ali Al Buainain, Director of Scholarship and Hanan Alsaadi, Project Director, Academic Institutions Licensing Expert and Jaber Al Shawi, Assistant Director of Communication and Media also attended the press briefing.

Hanan Al Saadi said, “We have contacted more than 600 universities and more than 90 universities from the United Kingdom  and the United States and other countries have confirmed to participate in the fair.”

They include 40 universities from the United Kingdom and 22 from the United States, in addition to universities from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Kuwait
and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Some universities are also going to participate through the embassies of the respective countries in Doha.

Al Saadi said that the British Council and the Embassy of the United States in Doha will hold various orientation seminars about universities and update students about visa systems.

The first day will be allocated to boys and the second day for girls, including those from private schools.

The Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs which is running scholarships on behalf of 17 government bodies will present opportunities for scholarships at the fair, said Director of Scholarship Ali Al Buainain.
