Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society’s (QRCS) relief staff working in Yemen are relentlessly carrying on with their efforts to help those affected by the recent escalation in violence in the
country.
A new contract was signed with the Thawra Public Hospital in Taiz to open a surgical emergency centre as part of the quick intervention project, with funding from Qatar Development
Fund (QVN).
For about seven months, Taiz has seen severe clashes between the fighters, which left behind dozens of victims. Affecting health care, education, water, and electricity facilities, the bombardment and blockade caused more than 20 public and private hospitals to shut down, amid increasing number of victims due to the war and subsequent epidemics.
In response, QRCS inaugurated a surgical emergency centre to treat the victims of war, with funding from QVN and in coordination with local partners.
In one and a half month, the centre has served more than 11,000 cases, from emergency to operation to hospitalisation to laboratory and radiology examinations.
So far, the hospital has performed a total of 199 major surgeries, thanks to its 140-member staff and a capacity of 70 beds, five ICU beds, and four surgical tables.
In a statement, Rashad
Al Akhali, Taiz Vice-Governor, indicated that the city was about to face a health calamity due to the war. He commended QRCS for setting up the surgical emergency centre to save the lives of the injured.
Nashwan Al Hossami, Administrative Manager of the centre, said, “Established on September 13, 2015 with no more than 140 administrative and technical staff, the centre receives the numerous civilian victims of the war.”
